A Level Further Maths

A Level Further Maths Tuition

Further Maths is a second, harder maths A Level, taken alongside A Level Maths. It is where maths gets properly beautiful, and properly hard. One-to-one support for Core Pure (the compulsory part) and the optional units, from a tutor who used this maths every day in an astrophysics degree.

  1. 1
    Ideas Before Methods

Further Maths rewards understanding. We spend time on why things work, not just the steps.

  2. 2
    Link the Two Courses

A Level Maths and Further Maths are taught side by side so each one supports the other.

  3. 3
    Stretch Problems

Harder, unfamiliar questions build the problem-solving that top grades demand.

  4. 4
    University Ready

For students taking university maths admissions tests (STEP for Cambridge, MAT for Oxford, TMUA for several other universities), we can include practice for these too.

"I Was Good at Maths. Then Complex Numbers Happened."

This is a common story with Further Maths students. They've always been the strong one in class, then Year 12 brings imaginary numbers, matrices and proofs that look nothing like GCSE.

The first month is about rebuilding confidence: drawing complex numbers on an Argand diagram until they feel real, seeing matrices as transformations rather than grids of numbers, and writing proofs one careful line at a time.

Once the ideas make sense, the methods follow, and the course becomes enjoyable again. That's usually when students start asking the "but why does that work?" questions that lead to the top grades.

A typical example of how lessons go for students on this course.

Questions

A Level Further Maths: Frequently Asked Questions

Do You Teach the Optional Units?

Yes: Further Mechanics, Further Statistics and Decision Mathematics. Lessons follow whichever options your child's school has chosen.

Can You Help With STEP, MAT or TMUA?

Yes. These are extra maths admissions tests used by some universities, such as Cambridge (STEP) and Oxford (MAT). We can add practice for them alongside the A Level content.

Should My Child Have Lessons for Both A Level Maths and Further Maths?

Often it's best to cover both in the same lessons, so we'll plan time for each based on where help is needed most.
