Who GCSE & IGCSE Maths Lessons Are For

Foundation Tier

The easier set of exam papers, up to Grade 5. For students aiming for a secure Grade 4 (a standard pass) or Grade 5 (a strong pass), the grades most colleges and employers ask for.

Higher Tier

The harder set of exam papers, for Grades 4 to 9. For students aiming for Grade 6 or above, with harder algebra, geometry and problem-solving.

Resitting GCSE

Missed the Grade 4 and need to pass it at college or sixth form.

How I Teach

A Calm, Structured Approach

Every lesson has a clear purpose, and you'll get a written progress update every six weeks so you always know how things are going.

See Example Plans →
  1. 1
    Follow the Exact Course

Your child's plan follows their exact exam board and tier (Foundation or Higher), so every lesson counts towards the real exam.

  2. 2
    Teach, Then Practise

Each new topic is taught step by step, then practised with real exam-style questions in the same lesson.

  3. 3
    Test as We Go

Checkpoint tests and a full practice exam (a mock exam) show what's secure and what needs another look, long before May.

  4. 4
    Exam-Ready by Spring

The final months are for timed papers, reviewing every mistake and building calm exam habits.

GCSE Resits

Resitting GCSE Maths? A Plan Built Around Last Time

In England, students who don't achieve a Grade 4 by 16 carry on studying maths at college or sixth form, with resits in November and in the summer. A resit isn't a fresh start from page one. It's a chance to fix exactly what went wrong.

So I don't use a one-size-fits-all course. I look at where your child lost marks, which topics are almost there and which need rebuilding, then write a resit plan and lesson plans around their particular gaps.

  1. Find Where the Marks WentWe go through their last paper or mock, topic by topic.
  2. A Personal Resit PlanThe plan targets the highest-value topics first, usually aiming for a secure Grade 4 or 5.
  3. Practise the Real ThingTimed papers in the weeks before the November or summer resit.
  4. Calm on the DayExam technique, checking work and a clear routine, so nerves don't cost marks again.

"No Complaints" from a 16-Year-Old

A Year 11 student came to me preparing for GCSE Maths at Foundation tier. He was fine at maths, but needed reassurance before the exams, and he had one clear goal: a Grade 5. He wanted it badly.

So we kept lessons calm and focused on the topics that carry the most marks at Foundation, with plenty of exam-style questions so nothing on the day would feel new.

His mum told me he has "no complaints when he knows he has a lesson with Ibrahim". For a 16-year-old facing a maths lesson, I'm taking that as a five-star review.

Both his parents work part-time hours, so we kept lesson times flexible around their week too.

“It's so reassuring to have Ibrahim on hand and so flexible.”Sylvia O., his mum

Questions

GCSE & IGCSE Maths: Frequently Asked Questions

Foundation or Higher: Which Tier Should My Child Take?

It depends on their current level and target grade. After the free lesson I'll give you an honest recommendation, and we'll review it after the first checkpoint test.

Do You Teach IGCSE as Well?

Yes. IGCSE (International GCSE) is used by many independent and international schools, and by home-educated students. Cambridge IGCSE (0580) and Edexcel IGCSE (4MA1) are very close to GCSE, and lessons follow the exam board's official list of topics.

When Should We Start?

Ideally by Year 10, but it's never too late. I've written plans starting in October of Year 11 that still cover every topic before the exams.

Can You Help With GCSE Resits?

Yes. See the resit section above. Resit plans focus on exactly where marks were lost last time.
